Take the Mystery out of Anxiety

Understanding anxiety and the body's response to anxiety were very important to recovery. Here are websites and books that were helpful to me when paired with professional help.

Helpful resources

Websites

PsychologyToday.com

This website is an excellent source to find a therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist. It includes their descriptions and contact information, and is searchable by specialities and location.

DrivingFearHelp.com

This was the best site that I used for driving anxiety. It provides an excellent explanation of anxiety and a description of how anxiety generates physical symptoms. It provides practical strategies to address anxiety, and in particular, driving anxiety.

Books

The Body Keeps the Score, by Bessel Van Der Kolk M.D.

This was the most valuable book for me because I was able to understand that the responses and feelings in my adult self had a mental and physical origin from traumatic experiences in my youth.  I wish that I had found this book earlier. It does an excellent job of describing how the mind and body generate the fear response and the link to traumatic experiences. It also describes clinical results of various  treatment strategies.

The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, by Edmund J. Bourne

Although the title is "Workbook" it is also an excellent source of information about anxiety. The book explains what anxiety is, major causes of anxiety, and treatment options. And because it is a workbook, it has thought exercises to help think through the particulars of the reader's issue.

Mastery of Your Specific Phobia, by Martin M. Antony et. al.

This book explains how phobias could develop. It then introduces strategies to deal with phobias in general, and in particular for specific phobias. One chapter is dedicated to driving.

Manage Anxiety Through CBT, by Windy Dryden

Retraining how to think and respond (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) was an important method for recovery. This book describes this method and includes practical examples and explanations.
